Masaki Tenchi
Masaki Tenchi is a normal seventeen-year-old high school boy; a little shy perhaps, but still normal. He lives with his grandfather and father near his family's shrine in Okayama. There's really only one thing strange about him. He lives with six alien women, and, as if this wasn't odd enough, all of them are also in love with him. However, this doesn't make life too complicated, except for the fact that they need to know exactly what he is doing at any time of the day. These facts don't deter Tenchi, though, when he decides to go to Tokyo to learn to be a shrine priest from a family friend. He moves into his own apartment, and when he is not at school, he is usually found working at the shrine or with a human girl who is rather attached to him, Kumashiro Sakuya.
However, there is trouble in Tokyo. Mysterious creatures have been popping up and attacking either Tenchi, or people close to Tenchi. Also, Tenchi meets many people who want Tenchi to be with Sakuya, such as Hotsuma. All of this leads to Tenchi discovering who he truly is. He learns from his grandfather that he is the guardian of Earth, and the crystals that his mother gave to him after she died could combine to form a sword which he could use to protect the Earth. This was a destiny he had to fulfill so that he could save Earth from Yuugi's invasion.
In the Japanese anime, Tenchi's voice is done by Kikuchi Masami.
Masaki Katsuhito
Masaki Katsuhito is the grandfather of Masaki Tenchi. He is a Shinto priest of the Masaki Shrine, and he is teaching Tenchi to follow in his footsteps. He is the only one who knew that Tenchi was going to Tokyo to train to become a shrine priest. In fact, he encouraged Tenchi to become a shrine priest, so that the Masaki shrine was not without a priest to attend it.
There is a second reason Katsuhito wants Tenchi to become a shrine priest. This reason deals with a secret that Katsuhito has kept from Tenchi for many years. This secret is that Tenchi, like all the priests of the Masaki Shrine that came before him, is the guardian of Earth. He is able to use the crystals that his mother gave him after she died to create a sword. This sword can then be used to fight off invaders who wish to conquer Earth. This is the duty of the priest of the Masaki Shrine; only he is able prevent the conquest of Earth because of the crystals and the ability to use them. Katsuhito is the only one who knows of this power, until he teaches Tenchi about it.
Katsuhito's voice is done by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Ryoko
Ryoko is a space pirate who had incorporated the aid of Washuu so that she could steal a powerful crystal from Jurai. She ends up on Earth after being chased by Aeka and Sasami, as well as Kiyone and Mihoshi, through space. She and Washuu crash, as do Aeka and Sasami. They are forced to remain on Earth as a result.
Ryoko is the most flirtatious of the girls towards Tenchi. At first, she is as annoyed as the rest of them that Tenchi had gone to Tokyo. In fact, she was very angry because she had not been there to say goodbye. She was the one who "persuaded" Washuu to use the portal to allow them to visit Tenchi whenever. However, she trusted Tenchi more after their date in Tokyo. She was the one most hurt by Tenchi, though, because she witnessed him kissing Sakuya. She returned to space as a result, and did not return to Earth until she realized that Hotsuma was working for Yuugi and that Tenchi was in trouble.
In the Japanese anime, Ryoko's voice is performed by Orikasa Ai.
Masaki Noboyuki
Masaki Noboyuki is the father of Tenchi, and the son-in-law of Katsuhito. He lives with his son and six alien women who crash landed near his house in Okayama. (His wife died many years ago, while Tenchi was still just a small child.) His father-in-law is a priest, and the shrine is next to Noboyuki's house. He works as an architect, and knows nothing about tending a shrine. He is proud of his son, and shows this by teasing Tenchi about his dating habits. He tries not to intrude too much on his son's life, though.
Noboyuki, like all of the girls, did not know that Tenchi was going to Tokyo until the day he took the picture and announced his intentions. At first, he was just as outraged as the girls were. Then, when he learned that Tenchi was to be the apprentice to a family friend who had helped Katsuhito when he was younger, Noboyuki agreed that it was for the best. Unfortunately, the girls decide otherwise, and they almost send him to Tokyo in place of Tenchi. He is saved, however, because Tenchi raises objections to their decision. For the most part, he stays out of Tenchi's life while Tenchi is in Tokyo, for he wants to give his son privacy. The only time that he visited Tenchi unannounced was when the girls bothered him too much and he needed a break from it. He was embarassed, though, because he ended up intruding on Tenchi and Sakuya. He never really finds out about Tenchi's power, or Katsuhito's power.
Noboyuki is voiced by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Ryo-ohki
Ryo-ohki is an adorable little cabbit. She is Sasami's pet, and came to Earth with Sasami and Aeka. She is a very talented cabbit, that everybody in the Masaki household has fallen in love with. She is able to transform herself in a giant pink cabbit mecha, as well as a spaceship. Sasami is able to pilot both of these forms. However, Ryo-ohki is in her cabbit form most of the time. She only transforms when someone she cares about is in need of her assistance (most of the time, she is aiding Sasami).
Ryo-ohki cares for everyone in the Masaki household, and she does everything she possibly can to help out. She helped save Tenchi and Katsuhito from the demons during the purification ceremony in Tokyo by transforming into the mecha. She aided Ryoko by bringing her the outskirts of Tokyo so that she could defeat that was interrupting communications with Tenchi. She entertained the people of Tokyo in order to make money to be spent on the Masaki household.
In the Japanese anime, Ryo-ohki's voice is performed by Kozakura Etsuko.
Aeka
Aeka is the Crown Princess of Jurai. She had come to Earth while chasing Ryoko and Washuu, because they had stolen an artifact from Jurai. This artifact was a power crystal, and its importance to the Jurai Royal family was such that Aeka and Sasami, Aeka's younger sister, followed the Galaxy Police to hunt down Ryoko. They followed them all the way to Earth, where they forced Ryoko's ship to crash. A fight between the Galaxy Police, with the help of Aeka, and Ryoko, who was aided by Washuu, ensued. Ryoko absorbed the crystal and transformed into a hideous monster, but Tenchi stopped the fight. This led to the introduction of Tenchi to the girls because, though no one was killed in the fight, there were some injuries. Tenchi felt bad, so he nursed everyone back to health.
Aeka, along with Sasami, decides to remain on Earth and they stay with Tenchi. Aeka develops a crush on Tenchi, which causes more tension between Aeka and Ryoko. They constantly fight each other in verbal battles to determine who is better suited to Tenchi. They only time that they willingly join forces is to prevent anyone else, namely Sakuya, from winning Tenchi's heart. However, whenever Sakuya is not in the picture, Ryoko and Aeka continue their usual fights.
Aeka is voiced by Takada Yumi in the Japanese anime.
