Tsukino Usagi (Serena Tsukino)

The main character in Sailor Moon is Tsukino Usagi. In the beginning of the series, she is 14 years old. She learns that she is Sailor Moon from a talking stray cat named Luna. On her way to school, Usagi had seen some young boys from elementary school tormenting a cat with a bandage on its head. Usagi removed the bandage, and then ran to school. Nothing out of the ordinary happened at school. When Usagi got home and entered her room, though, she discovered that the cat had followed her. The cat then began to talk to her, telling her that Usagi was Sailor Moon and that her name was Luna, and gave her a brooch. Usagi transformed, and followed Luna's advise as best as possible to help her friend, Osaka Naru (Molly in the English dub.) After the fight, Usagi decided to take in Luna, and Luna became her mentor. This began Usagi's adventures as Sailor Moon.

As the seasons go on, Usagi learns new powers and is able to transform into different incarnations of Sailor Moon. The three incarnations of Sailor Moon are Sailor Moon, Super Sailor Moon, and Eternal Sailor Moon. She also learns about her past as Princess Selenity in the Moon Kingdom, and her future as Neo-Queen Selenity in Crystal Tokyo.

While not fighting as Sailor Moon, Usagi is a fairly normal teenager. She is in 8th grade in the beginning of the series and attends Juuban Junior High. By the end of the series, she is 16, in 10th grade, and attends Juuban High School. She hangs out at the mall with her friends when she has free time (unless she's being forced to study). She's very personable, and makes friends fairly easily. She lives her parents, Ikuko and Kenji, and her younger brother, Shingo.

Tsukino Usagi, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Mitsuishi Kotono, though Araki Kae did her voice for a few episodes.

Chiba Mamoru (Darien Chiba)

Chiba Mamoru is a college student who hangs around the Crown Arcade, where Usagi and her friends often meet. Whenever he sees Usagi, he teases and sometimes even mocks her, which she dislikes him for. The reason for this is that, when they first met, Usagi had thrown a test onto his Mamoru's head by accident, and, from then on, he felt the need to tease her whenever they met. However, he is also Tuxedo Kamen (Tuxedo Mask), into which he is able to transform whenever Sailor Moon is in trouble. Usagi happens to have a crush on Tuxedo Kamen. This she developed when she first met Tuxedo Mask. He had come to help her while she was saving Naru.

Tuxedo Mask does not go through any power-ups. However, he does learn that he was Prince Endymion of the Earth Kingdom in the past, and that he and Princess Selenity had been very deeply in love. He also discovers that he will become King Endymion of Crystal Tokyo in the upcoming future. His wife will be Neo-Queen Selenity, and they shall have a daughter, Princess Lady Selenity.

Mamoru, while not fighting as Tuxedo Mask, lives by himself in an apartment in Juubangai. He attends college at Azabu Institute of Technology. He has been an orphan since he lost his parents when he was six. In the car accident that took the lives of his parents, Mamoru lost his memory and did not remember anything before the accident. He remained in an orphanage until he was a teenager. When he left, he worked hard in school and got a job, which allowed him to pay for the apartment, get the motorcycle, and get the car.

Chiba Mamoru, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Furuya Tohru.

Mizuno Ami (Amy Mizuno)

Mizuno Ami is 14 years old, and is Sailor Mercury. She learns this while at cram school (computer school in the American dub). She had met Usagi earlier that day, while walking home from school. (They had seen each other in school, but they didn't really know each other.) Luna had jumped on her shoulder and noticed a strange aura surrounding her. Usagi invited Ami to play a game, Sailor V, at the Crown Arcade. Ami leaves in a hurry a while later, because she is running late for cram school. As she is leaving, she drops a disk, which Motoki picks up and gives to Usagi. Usagi and Luna check out what's on the disk and discover a brainwashing program, which causes Luna to believe Ami is a youma (First season's name for the monster of the day). They go to the cram school and notice there is trouble. They discover the youma is the teacher, not Ami, and Luna gives Ami her henshin stick (transformation pen). She transformed into Sailor Mercury.

As the series continues on, Ami's powers increase, and she is able to transform into Super Sailor Mercury. She learns of her past, as one of Princess Selenity's guardians and as Princess of Mercury. She also learns of her future as one of the Royal Family's guardians. As such, she protects Neo-Queen Selenity, King Endymion, and their daughter, Princess Lady Selenity. 

When she is not fighting evil beings attempting to take over Earth as Sailor Mercury, Ami spends much of her time studying in order to excel at school (She attends Juuban Junior High, and, when she is 16, she attends Juuban High School). Her dream is to be a doctor, like her mother. Her parents are divorced; she lives with her mother and doesn't get to see her father, a painter, that often, though he does send her postcards from time to time. Her first real friend was Usagi; everyone else thought that she was weird because she studied all the time. 

Mizuno Ami, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Hisakawa Aya.

Hino Rei (Raye Hino)

Hino Rei is a 14 year old girl who learns that she is able to transform into Sailor Mars. She discovers this after being kidnapped by Jadeite when she learned that he was the one who caused the 6 o'clock bus to disappear. She had received her henshin stick from Luna, though Rei thought that Usagi had dropped it, so she had picked it up and kept it. After being kidnapped by Jadeite, Luna told Rei to use the henshin stick, and she became Sailor Mars.

Later on in the series, as her powers increase, she is able to transform into Super Sailor Mars. Also, she learns of her past as one of the guardians of Princess Selenity, and as the Princess of Mars. She learns of her future as one of the guardians of Neo-Queen Selenity, King Endymion, and Princess Lady Selenity, as well.

While she is not fighting as Sailor Mars, Rei lives with her grandfather at the Hikawa Jinga. There she is training to become a Shinto priestess. She also attends the T*A Private Girls' School, which is a private Catholic school for girls that does elementary through to high school, throughout the series. At this school, she is well respected, but everyone was distant towards her because she was so spiritual that everyone thought that she was spooky. She had no real friends until the day that she met Usagi at the Hikawa Jinga and learned that she was Sailor Mars.

Hino Rei, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Tomizawa Michie.

Kino Makoto (Lita Kino)

Kino Makoto is a 14 year old girl who discovers that she is able to transform into Sailor Jupiter. She learned this after attempting to protect one of the Crystal Carriers, "Crane Arashi no Joe" (I don't remember his English name, though I remember it did have Joe in it... This name is from Hitoshi Doi's site.). Zoicite had managed to get the Rainbow Crystal (or nijizuishou) from Joe and turned him into a youma. Sailor Moon was trying to fight (well... escape) the youma, but couldn't. Makoto picked up the youma and threw him to help Sailor Moon, and as she did so, the symbol of Jupiter appeared on her forehead. Luna gave her a henshin stick, and she became Sailor Jupiter.

As the series continued, Makoto's powers increased. She eventually became Super Sailor Jupiter. She also discovered her past as the Princess of Jupiter and one of the guardians of Princess Selenity, during the time of the Moon Kingdom. She learned that she will be one of the guardians of Neo-Queen Selenity, King Endymion, and Princess Lady Selenity, as well. 

When she is not fighting as Sailor Jupiter, Makoto is usually hanging out at the mall, or at school. She attends Juuban Junior High with Usagi and Ami, and later, when she is 16, she attends Juuban High. She lives alone in an apartment. Her parents had died in an airplane accident not too long before she came to Juuban Junior High. For this reason, she is afraid of airplanes. Her first real friend was Usagi. Everyone else was afraid of her because she was so strong. Rumors flew around whatever school she attended that she had been kicked out of her previous school for fighting.

Kino Makoto, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Shinohara Emi.

Aino Minako (Mina Aino)

Aino Minako is 14 years old, and she learns that she is able to transform into a Sailor Senshi. She transformed into Sailor Venus, though she called herself Sailor V, which is who the Sailor V game is named after. She was actually the first senshi to be found, She was found when she was 13 years old, in 7th grade. (*Note: Minako's background comes mostly from the manga "Codename: Sailor V"*) Artemis, her guardian cat, found her while she was performing a gymnastics routine. She ended up landing on top of Artemis, who then proceeded to run out of the gym. Throughout the rest of the day, Minako saw Artemis in various places. He was following her and observing her, which led him to be a little nervous about the future. However, she was the one he was looking for, so Artemis appeared in Minako's room and started explaining that she was a protector of Earth, the senshi of Venus. Minako thought that it was all a dream, until she saw Artemis again while she was at school. Artemis recognized the guy that she had a crush on, Higashi, as an agent for the Dark Agency (a small sector of the Dark Kingdom (Negaverse in English dub) run by Danburite.) Minako was forced to battle her sempai. She won, and began her life as a senshi, Sailor Venus.

The other senshi learn about Sailor Venus when she saves them from Kunzite (Malachite in English dub) and Zoicite. Zoicite had been pretending to be Sailor Moon in order to lure the senshi into a trap, so that the Dark Kingdom could get all the nijizuishou from the senshi and Tuxedo Kamen.

With the continuation of the series, Minako's powers increase. Eventually, she is able to transform into Super Sailor Venus. Also, she learns of her past as Princess of Venus and as one of the guardians of Princess Selenity. Then, she learns of her future as one of the guardians of the Royal Family of Crystal Tokyo. Minako will protect Neo-Queen Selenity, King Endymion, and Princess Lady Selenity in the future.

When she is not fighting as Sailor Venus, Minako enjoys being at the mall and being with her friends. She goes to school at Shibakouen Junior High and lives with her mother and father, though she is often in trouble with them, especially her mother. The first real friend that she made when she came back to Tokyo was Usagi. (In 7th grade, her best friend was Hikaru.) Minako was never able to stay after school and be with friends because she was busy doing school work or practicing volleyball. Then, when she became Sailor V, she had no time whatsoever to be with friends outside of school. Also, she moved at least twice, going from Tokyo to England, and then back to Tokyo about a year later. 

Aino Minako, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Fukami Rica.

Tsukino Chibi Usa (Rini)

Tsukino Chibi Usa is a seemingly young girl from the future. (I say seemingly only because, in the manga, she is 901 years old. In the anime, I think that she is only about 8 years old, but I'm not exactly certain.) She had fled to the past to get the ginzuishou in order to save her mother. She was also running from the people of the Dark Moon (Negamoon in the English DIC dub). In Sailor Moon R, where Chibi Usa is first introduced, it is discovered that she is from the future. In the future, she is known as Princess Lady Selenity of Crystal Tokyo. She is the only daughter of Neo-Queen Selenity and King Endymion. The Dark Moon family followed her to the past because of this. Wiseman eventually caught her, and he brainwashed her into thinking that no one loved her. She became Black Lady. Sailor Moon became Neo-Queen Selenity and convinced Black Lady that she was loved, which changed Black Lady back into Chibi Usa. After helping the senshi save her mother, she returned to 30th Century Crystal Tokyo.

Chibi Usa later returned to the past because her parents from the future wanted the senshi to help train her. Neo-Queen Selenity and King Endymion wanted her to become a better senshi, and learn to make new friends. By this time, Chibi Usa had recently discovered her powers, so she was able to transform into Sailor Chibimoon (Sailor Mini Moon in English dub). However, her parents were more concerned with her making friends because, in the 30th Century, there is no one around the palace that is her age, and she is a princess so most people are in awe of her. She does manage to make a really good friend, Hotaru, and helps the Inner Senshi see the goodness in Hotaru, which caused them to protect her when she was in danger from the Outer Senshi. Chibi Usa left after the destruction of the Death Busters (Heart Snatchers in English dub), but she returned to aid the senshi in the fight against the last daimon (heart snatcher in English dub).

Chibi Usa remains in Tokyo with the senshi while fighting Neherenia. She and Sailor Moon both get their power-ups, and Chibi Usa is able to transform into Super Sailor Chibimoon (Super Sailor Mini Moon in English dub). Chibi Usa is also the only one able to call Pegasus to aid them. She and Pegasus develop a strong friendship. Chibi Usa falls in love with him, and he falls for her. (It is not seen whether this relationship continues when Chibi Usa returns to Crystal Tokyo.) The reason she is the only one who can contact Pegasus is he is hiding from the Dead Moon Circus (Dark Moon Circus in English dub) in her dream mirror. Because of this, she is captured by the Dead Moon Circus so that they can get Pegasus and the Golden Crystal, which is the horn on Pegasus' head. She is rescued by the senshi, and she and Sailor Moon used their powers to defeat the Dead Moon Circus.

Tsukino Chibi Usa, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Araki Kae.

Meiou Setsuna (Trista Meiou)

Meiou Setsuna is first introduced during Sailor Moon R; however, she is not called Meiou Setsuna until Sailor Moon S. When she is first introduced, she is known only as Sailor Pluto, the mysterious senshi who guards the Time Gate. She had sent Chibi Usa back to the 20th century in order to protect her, and allow her to save her mother and Crystal Tokyo. She communicates with Chibi Usa via Luna-P. She is the one who encourages Chibi Usa to trust in the Senshi, and she cheers up Chibi Usa when she is depressed. She is a lonely warrior, though. She guards the Time Gate by herself, and her only friends at this point are Neo-Queen Selenity and Chibi Usa. No one else visits her while she guards the Time Gate.

Setsuna, with coming of the Death Busters, received a new mission, however. It was here that she revealed that she was also known as Meiou Setsuna. She is one of the Outer Senshi, and on her Time Key is her talisman ("crystal treasure" in the English dub). This talisman is called the Garnet Orb. When the three talisman are together, they create the Chalice (Purity Chalice in English dub). In this mission to prevent the coming of Sailor Saturn, Setsuna joined Haruka and Michiru, though she did aid the Inner Senshi for a while. During this mission, she used one of her forbidden attacks (she stopped time) which killed her. By doing this, though, she saved Neptune and Uranus, which enabled them to continue fighting the Death Busters.

It has not been seen in the dub, but Setsuna does return in Sailor Stars, and she is able to transform into Super Sailor Pluto because Hotaru helped her power-up.

Meiou Setsuna, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Kawashima Chiyoko.

Ten'ou Haruka (Amara Ten'ou)

Ten'ou Haruka is 16 years old, and is able to transform into Sailor Uranus. This was a destiny that, originally, she did not want. She had dreams of the future which showed the coming of the Dark Messiah and received messages in these dreams from Sailor Neptune. She realized that this was to be her destiny, and she knew that all she wanted was to be in motor sports. She did other sports so as not to get bored. She wanted to be faster than anything in order to escape this destiny. However, by running like the wind, she just brought her destiny closer to her.

After one of her races, a competitor, Elza Gray, introduced her to Kaiou Michiru, whom Haruka knew to be Sailor Neptune because of her dreams. Michiru asked if she could paint Haruka, but Haruka refused because she realized that Michiru knew Haruka's destiny. This wasn't the only time she saw Michiru. On a cruise, she met Michiru once again. Michiru was playing the violin as part of the entertainment, and she had some of her paintings hanging up in the ship. Haruka noticed one entitled End of the World, and asked how she could imagine something like that. Michiru said that it was not her imagination, it was their destiny. Haruka said that she only wanted to race, and Michiru replied that she wanted to play the violin and not go through with this destiny either. Haruka finally accepted her destiny when she saw someone transform into a daimon. Sailor Neptune told her not to touch the henshin stick that had appeared in front of Haruka if she didn't want the life of a senshi, but Haruka transformed into Sailor Uranus after Neptune had been injured by the daimon. From then on, Haruka and Michiru worked together. 

Haruka practically lives for motor sports. She is the only female driver on the circuit. She also enjoys track and field, but it doesn't compare to motor sports. Because of her athletic ability, she was able to enter Mugen Gakuen High School. She also plays the piano rather well. Her second year of high school was spent at Juuban High School, because Mugen Gakuen was destroyed during the battle with Master Pharaoh 90. She and Michiru are almost always together, and they are in love (In the English dub, they try to cover this up by calling them cousins). She receives her power-up from Hotaru in Sailor Stars; she is able to transform into Super Sailor Uranus. 

Ten'ou Haruka, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Ogata Megumi.

Kaiou Michiru (Michelle Kaiou)

Kaiou Michiru is 16 years old when she and Haruka first meet the Inner Senshi. She is also Sailor Neptune. She discovered her destiny before Haruka, and she was the reason Haruka accepted her destiny. She had actually wanted to meet Haruka before she had discovered that Haruka was Sailor Uranus. Michiru had seen Haruka racing and decided that she wanted to go for a drive with Haruka. She is in love with Haruka, and has been since she first met her (even if the English dub wants us to think that they are cousins, which they're not). 

Like Haruka, Michiru did not want her destiny. She wanted to play her violin and paint. Unfortunately, she did not have someone there to tell her to not touch the henshin stick. She became Sailor Neptune because of this. However, she was glad to discover that Haruka was Uranus, though she didn't want to force Haruka to follow her destiny because she didn't want Haruka to be unhappy. During the battle in which Haruka became Uranus, she admitted her feelings for Haruka. This is what helped Haruka decide to become Uranus.

Michiru loves to paint and play the violin. She is world renowned for both of these talents. Sometimes, Michiru and Haruka perform duets because of their musical abilities. Her first year of high school was spent at Mugen Gakuen High School, with Haruka. She was able to enter because of her musical talent and her painting ability. She and Haruka entered the school in order to work undercover because of their mission to find the talisman. They were suspicious of the school, believing it to be behind the daimon attacks. Her second year was spent at Juuban High School. During that school year, she received her power-up from Hotaru with Haruka and Setsuna. She is able to transform into Super Sailor Neptune. 

Kaiou Michiru, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Katsuki Masako.

Tomoe Hotaru (Hotaru Tomoe)

Tomoe Hotaru is 12 years old, and a sixth grade student at Mugen Gakuen School. She is also Sailor Saturn, the senshi that the Outers did not want to awaken. They tried to prevent this by killing her; however, Sailor Moon and the Inner Senshi stopped the Outers because she had become Chibi Usa's best friend. They felt that she was a good person, and she was a senshi, so she was part of the team. As a result, they protected Hotaru until she was taken by Kaolinite.

After being taken by Kaolinite, Hotaru switched personalities. She did not become Sailor Saturn; instead, she began her transformation into Mistress 9, the alien being that was implanted in Hotaru's body after the explosion that had killed her mother. Kaolinite brought Chibi Usa to her and sacrificed her to Hotaru/Mistress 9. Mistress 9 took Chibi Usa's pure heart and consumed it, which gave her enough energy to transform into Mistress 9. Mistress 9 then lured Sailor Moon to Mugen Gakuen to get the Chalice from her. She succeeded, which enabled her to bring Master Pharaoh 90 to Earth from the Tau star system. Hotaru and Saturn fought Mistress 9 for control of the body. Eventually, Hotaru and Saturn won. Mistress 9 was destroyed, and Saturn went to destroy Master Pharaoh 90. Sailor Moon, after powering-up to Super Sailor Moon, followed her and brought her back as a baby.

Tomoe Hotaru returns in Sailor Stars. Setsuna takes her from her father and brings her to Haruka and Michiru. Hotaru begins to age rapidly, going from an infant to a 4-year-old in a matter of minutes. She also gives Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna power-ups so that they, as well as she, become Super Sailors. She transforms into Super Sailor Saturn.

Tomoe Hotaru, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Minaguchi Yuko.

'Elios (Helios)

'Elios is a boy (at least, he doesn't look old enough to be a man) who appears to be about 14 or 15 years old. His exact age has not been given. He lives in Elysion, where he guards the golden crystal. He is also able to transform into a Pegasus, which he did to protect the crystal. He hid in the golden mirror so that Nehelenia did not get the golden crystal from him. She had kidnapped him because she knew that with the golden crystal, she could take over the Earth and she could still remain beautiful forever. Though she captured his body, she did not have his spirit, which transformed itself into the Pegasus to protect the crystal and protect Elysion as best as possible. Because of the attack by Nehelenia, Elysion was dying and she was able to attack Earth.

'Elios, aside from protecting the golden crystal and Elysion, is also Mamoru's guardian. He is the priest of Elysion and protects using his prayers. His prayers can protect Elysion, and would have had the Dead Moon Circus not been so powerful and had it not caught him off guard. The Dead Moon Circus came rapidly and 'Elios had not been prepared. Also, no one was there to aid him because he was the only human in Elysion (unless you count the shrine maidens that are seen in the manga, but at the time of the attack, the maidens were asleep.) 

'Elios contacts Chibi Usa because he is hiding in her dream mirror. During their talks, they learned about each other, and began to fall in love. They develop a strong friendship, but it is not seen whether this goes any further. 'Elios is only seen in the SuperS series, so it is not known how their relationship develops.

'Elios, in the Japanese version, is voiced by Matsuno Taiki.

Chibi Chibi (no name yet in English, though she is called Chibi Chibi in the English manga)

Chibi Chibi has not appeared yet in the English dub, because she is a character from Sailor Stars. She is not the daughter of Usagi or the daughter of Chibi Usa. She is actually Galaxia's star seed in the Japanese anime.

In the Japanese version, Chibi Chibi is voiced by Mitsuishi Kotono.
