Masaki Tenchi
Masaki Tenchi is a seventeen year old boy in high school. He lives with his father in a suburban area, until the day after Ryoko destroyed his school, when they met Aeka, and then his house ended up landing next to his grandfather's shrine in Okinawa. However, he has a problem: too many women are in love with him, and all of them reside in his house. It had all started when Tenchi had released Ryoko from her cave. She was the first of the many women who decided to live with Masaki family, after she had blown up Tenchi's school. Then, Tenchi met Aeka, who was searching for her brother Yosho and blamed Ryoko for his disappearance, and Sasami, Aeka's younger sister. These two also decided to live with Tenchi, because the fight in space had damaged Ryuoh and they were stuck on Earth. Mihoshi fell from the sky because she lost control of Yukinojo, so she was forced to stay on Earth. Washuu found Tenchi interesting and wanted to study him, so she decided to stay with Tenchi. As a result of having all these women live him, Tenchi gets some help around the house and at the shrine, but also gets to listen to constant bickering, and more problems develop because of who is living with him and who he is.
However, it was fate that allowed Tenchi to meet all these women, and because of their meeting, Tenchi learns of his destiny and who he truly is. Tenchi first discovers that he is more than a mere Earthling after he released Ryoko. The sword which had held Ryoko captive, Tenchi-ken, activated while Ryoko was attacking Tenchi at his school. Then, Tenchi learned that his grandfather, Katsuhito was Yosho, the first crown prince of Jurai. Katsuhito and Tenchi-ken recognized Tenchi as the heir to the throne of Jurai just before Tenchi left to save Ryoko from Kagato. Tsunami showed Tenchi his true power after Kagato had almost killed him. He discovered that he had a direct connection to Tsunami and was able to produce three Light Hawk Wings because of this. However, he was able to produce the Light Hawk Wings without the aid of Tsunami as well, which he was forced to do while fighting Kagato.
In the Japanese anime, Tenchi's voice is done by Kikuchi Masami.
Masaki Katsuhito (Yosho)
Masaki Katsuhito is the grandfather of Tenchi. He is the shrine priest of the Masaki shrine in Okayama. Even though he is rather old, he still is quite proficient at martial arts; in fact, he is teaching Tenchi to use a sword. However, his technique with a sword is one which is recognizable to Aeka, and this makes her wonder about how he could know that sword technique. She tried to ask, but he ignored her question and paid more attention to her injury. It is not until Kagato comes and calls him the "Crown Prince of Jurai" while Katsuhito used Tenchi-ken to fight Kagato that she realizes that Masaki Katsuhito and Yosho are the same man. This makes Katsuhito over 700 years old (he must be somewhere near 740 since Aeka is 723, and he was probably in his twenties when he left), and though he actually looks as if he were in his twenties, he prefers to disguise himself as man about sixty years old.
It turns out that Yosho used Ryoko's attack on Jurai to flee from Jurai because of all the prejudice against him. There was prejudice against Yosho only because he was half-Juraian. His mother, Funaho, had been from Earth, and the people of Jurai did not want to accept a half-breed as their new king. However, Yosho is quite content to live out his life on Earth without ever stepping up to the throne of Jurai. Unfortunately, his father, Asuza, feels differently. Asuza has told Yosho that he will wait as long as it takes for him to decide to become king.
Katsuhito's voice is done by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Yosho's voice is done by Koyasu Takehito in the Japanese anime.
Ryoko
Ryoko is a 2017 year old demon, even though she appears to be seventeen years old, who is the daughter of Washuu; however, she originally believed that she had been created by Kagato and thus worked for him most of her life. She had been sealed in the forbidden cave near the Masaki Shrine for 700 years. She had been put there by Yosho, an ancestor of Masaki Tenchi, because she had been terrorizing the people. Tenchi had always been curious about the forbidden cave and often went near it despite his grandfather's rule that no one was allowed to go there. Because of this, Ryoko was able to watch Tenchi grow up, and she came to care deeply for him. She eventually realized that she had fallen in love with him, and couldn't be without him.
One day, Tenchi managed to get the keys to the cave from his grandfather and he entered the cave for the first time in his life. He found Yosho's sword, but he broke its rusty blade on a nearby rock, which cracked in half as a result of the impact. This opened a door, revealing a path that led down to a pool of water....and a mummy, aka Ryoko. He tried to seal her back up in the cave, but he came to realize that he was mistaken. Ryoko attacked him one night at his school. They ended up destroying half the school during this fight. Most of the time, Tenchi ran because he had no way to defend himself against her attacks. Fortunately for him, he was able to get to his desk and retrieve his school bag, where he had Tenchi-ken. Ryoko caught up to Tenchi while he was outside, but Tenchi-ken saved him. Ryoko disappeared after the fight, and Tenchi thought that that was the end of it all, until he found her in his bed. She demanded the gems, but he only returned one. She decided to remain with Tenchi, especially since he had the sword.
In the Japanese anime, Ryoko's voice is performed by Orikasa Ai.
Masaki Noboyuki
Masaki Noboyuki is the father of Tenchi. He is a single parent, as his wife, the daughter of Masaki Katsuhito, had died when Tenchi was still a young boy. He enjoys teasing Tenchi about all the women in Tenchi's life. He does, however, give Tenchi his privacy when he needs it, instead of creating extremely embarassing situations for Tenchi (like when Tenchi discovered Ryoko in his room after she had blown up his school). He doesn't usually have too much of a clue as to what's going on; he kind of just blindly accepts it, which explains why he allowed six alien women to live in his house, aside from the fact that they are good company, and they're all women.
Noboyuki is very different from his son. He enjoys teasing his son, and he is not shy at all. He is an architect in a nearby city, close to where he and Tenchi used to live, before Ryoko crashed Ryo-ohki in Okayama, near the Masaki Shrine. He's very calm, even with all those women living with him. But then again, he's kinda made taking care of the women and their problems Tenchi's responsibility. He enjoys fooling around, especially when he's supposed to be working, and sometimes Tenchi has to remind him to get back to work, like when they were repairing resort that Ryoko and Aeka had destroyed during their previous visit.
Noboyuki is voiced by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Ryo-ohki
Ryo-ohki is the cute little cabbit that loves carrots and is friends with everyone who live at the Masaki residence, though it often seems that she is closest with Sasami. She is also Ryoko's spaceship. She is the second generation of the ship, for the first generation was destroyed beyond repair during the fight in space with Aeka. Fortunately, the ship was able to reproduce itself, and the cabbit Ryo-ohki was born. Unfortunately, while Ryo-ohki was still in her egg, Ryoko used everyone's lack of knowledge regarding her spaceship to her advantage. She had basically everyone believing that Ryo-ohki was Tenchi's and her child, until Ryo-ohki came out of her egg.
Ryo-ohki, like Ryoko, was created by Washuu. They were created around the same time and have been together since then, which is probably one of the reasons why they work so well together. Later on, it is discovered that Ryo-ohki was created using genes from a MASS and minerals, similar to the way that Ryoko was made. Because of this, she is able to communicate with the MASSES (as well as Ryoko), and they believe her to be their leader. This leads to the escape of the MASSES from the tank Washuu held them in. They went to the field to do what Ryo-ohki wished, which was help Tenchi. Ryo-ohki was forced to merge with the MASSES so that they didn't become frightened and hurt Tenchi. As a result of this merging, Ryo-ohki has three forms: the cabbit, the spaceship, and the young cat-girl.
In the Japanese anime, Ryo-ohki's voice is performed by Kozakura Etsuko.
Aeka
Aeka is the Crown Princess of Jurai, and is about 723 years old. Her younger sister is Sasami, and she has an older half-brother, Yosho, who was also her fiancée. She had left Jurai in order to search for him. Her search led her to Earth, where she found Ryoko. She planned to capture Ryoko to find out the possible whereabouts of Yosho, and then take Ryoko to be imprisoned, even though the warrant had expired. Ryoko was easily captured, since she had just woken. This brought about the meeting of Aeka and Tenchi, who was taken when Ryoko was captured. Aeka did not pay much attention to Tenchi, except she did wonder why he had Tenchi-ken, when it belonged to Yosho. She asks Ryoko about this, but Ryoko just acts as if Aeka was blind. Aeka did not realize that Tenchi-ken accepted Tenchi until Tenchi stole back the sword. She became interested in him and asked him about Yosho. He said that he thought Yosho was dead.
Aeka ended up staying with Tenchi at the Masaki residence after a fight with Ryoko in space. Ryuoh was destroyed, so Aeka was forced to remain on Earth. Tenchi allowed her to remain at the Masaki residence, much to Ryoko's dismay. The two constantly fight, especially since they are in such close quarters. However, they do get along during the fight with Kagato. It is just before this fight that Aeka learns that Katsuhito, Tenchi's grandfather, is actually her half-brother, Yosho. He explains that he never realized that Aeka was that serious about marrying him, and then jokingly comments that they could still get married, which she smacks him for. Yosho then says that Tenchi would make a fine replacement, to which Aeka does not object.
Aeka is voiced by Takada Yumi in the Japanese anime.
