Masaki Tenchi
Masaki Tenchi is a high school student, approximately seventeen years old. He is the son of Masaki Noboyuki and the grandson of Masaki Katsuhito. He lives a fairly normal life, except six alien women who are all in love with him live with him, and his grandfather is not who he seems. This all leads to Tenchi learning the truth about himself. Tenchi's discovery of his true powers begins after Aeka, Sasami, and Ryoko were taken by the security forces of Jurai. This occurred after the new emperor of Jurai, "Yosho", stepped up to the throne. Aeka and Sasami were charged with treason and Ryoko was charged with aiding Aeka and Sasami. Tenchi decided that he needed to save them, and this began his whole adventure.
In order to clear up the whole mess after rescuing Aeka, Sasami, and Ryoko, Tenchi's grandfather, Katsuhito, suggested that they go to Jurai. They had to go through many obstacles in order for them to get there. However, they eventually enter Jurai air space and they resurrect the knights. Tenchi learns about his ancestry, because his grandfather finally admits that he is Yosho, the true crown prince of Jurai, and that Tenchi was his successor. Tenchi also learns that Kagato is the man who had become Jurai's emperor, and he wanted to destroy the bloodline of Jurai's royal family, which is why he had targeted Aeka and Sasami. Tenchi then uses his powers to save Aeka, but leaves Jurai afterward because he decides that he was not cut out for life as a member of Jurai's royal family.
In the Japanese anime, Tenchi's voice is done by Kikuchi Masami.
Masaki Katsuhito (Yosho)
Masaki Katsuhito is Tenchi's grandfather. He is a Shinto priest at the Masaki shrine in Okayama. He is the one who is teaching Tenchi how to be a priest of a Shinto shrine. He is also teaching Tenchi how to wield a sword, even though he appears to be about sixty years old. He himself is rather talented at using a sword, and his technique has caused Aeka to wonder where he learned it. However, he doesn't explain to her how her had learned techniques similar to those used on Jurai. In fact, he seems to know quite a bit about Jurai, considering he's supposed to be an ordinary earthling, but his secrets are not discovered until later.
No one had any idea about the secrets that Katsuhito kept, not even Washuu. It was not until the group reached Juraian territory that they discover what Katsuhito has been hiding. It is first noticed when, after passing through the checkpoint, Katsuhito names a planet that only those of Jurai have even heard of. He does not explain how he learned this information; he just states that it is the only place for them to go. When he awakens the two warriors who were guardians of the emperor of Jurai, it is realized that Masaki Katsuhito is, in fact, Yosho, the emperor of Jurai. This is further proved when, on the planet that formerly was the home of Jurai's royal palace, a statue of a younger Katsuhito was discovered, along with a broken statue. The others ask who the person impersonating Yosho was, but Katsuhito did not give them an answer. However, he suspects that it is his former friend, Kagato, though he does not tell anyone until Kagato fought Katsuhito and then kidnapped Aeka.
Katsuhito's voice is done by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Yosho's voice is done by Koyasu Takehito in the Japanese anime.
Ryoko
Ryoko is a space pirate who was being chased by the Galaxy Police when she met Tenchi. She was saved by Tenchi after her ship had crashed near his home. He had been walking to school when he found her. She told him that she was being chased by space pirates, and that she needed his help to protect herself from them. He agreed, and they started running from the "space pirates." They were chased all over the area near the Masaki shrine, until they were cornered at a cliff. Ryoko acted as if she was defenseless, and Tenchi, believing her to be sincere, protected her. It was not until Mihoshi, "the space pirate," broke her battle armor that Tenchi learned the truth.
Ryoko decided to stay with Tenchi, because she thought that Earth, being such a backwater planet, would be the perfect place for her to hide from the Galaxy Police. This eventually leads to trouble with Jurai, as well as the Galaxy Police. Ryoko, because of her notoriety and the fact that she was living with Aeka and Sasami, was accused of aiding Aeka in an attempt to take control of Jurai. For this reason, she had to help Tenchi and the others fix the problem and clear everyone's names, so she travels with them to Jurai, but returns to space before Aeka is rescued.
In the Japanese anime, Ryoko's voice is performed by Orikasa Ai.
Masaki Noboyuki
Masaki Noboyuki is Tenchi's father, and the son-in-law of Masaki Katsuhito. He is raising Tenchi as a single parent, because his wife had died while Tenchi was still a boy. He is very different from Tenchi, though he is acts a lot like Katsuhito. He is not shy, and enjoys the company of women. He likes to tease his son, especially about being surrounded by women constantly. He likes saké, and when it snows, he has been known to allow a snowflake to land in the saké before he drinks it (something Katsuhito has been known to do as well), perhaps in remembrance of his wife, who had died on a snowy day. He is an architect who does not always enjoy his job because of the customer's demand for faster results.
Masaki Noboyuki has no special powers, unlike his son and father-in-law. In fact, he was taken completely by surprise when he learned of these powers, because he had no idea that either of them were more than normal Earthlings. He even asked Katsuhito why Katsuhito had never mentioned that he was the Crown Prince of Jurai before Noboyuki had married Katsuhito's daughter. He basically joins the group because he had been taken by Jurai's army when they originally came to arrest Aeka and Sasami, and he had sort of developed an attachment for all the women who had been residing with them. Plus, his house was being taken on the journey anyway, so he went along with them.
Noboyuki is voiced by Aono Takeshi in the Japanese anime.
Ryo-ohki
Ryo-ohki is a very cute cabbit, as well as Ryoko's space ship. Everyone can not help but love her. She often is seen with Sasami, but she will obey just about every command Ryoko gives her. However, Ryo-ohki does have a mind of her own, and if she doesn't agree with Ryoko's command, she will disobey (like when Ryoko told her to attack Nagi). Ryo-ohki is also very caring. She doesn't like seeing anyone hurt, especially those that she is closest to (like when she didn't want Ryoko to kill Nagi).
Ryo-ohki has been with Ryoko for many years. They have been practically inseparable, though how Ryoko managed to obtain Ryo-ohki is a mystery. Ryoko has used Ryo-ohki, the first and second generation, as her space ship for many, if not all, of Ryoko's activities as a space pirate. She had lost the first generation Ryo-ohki when she crashed onto Earth, and the second generation was born a few days later. (This second generation was originally said to be Ryoko and Tenchi's child by Ryoko.) The second generation Ryo-ohki is the one that everyone in the Masaki household gets to meet.
In the Japanese anime, Ryo-ohki's voice is performed by Kozakura Etsuko.
Aeka
Aeka is the Crown Princess of Jurai, and is from one of the many branches of the Jurai Royal Family. She had been returning from meeting a suitor when she receives a distress call. It is from Mihoshi. Aeka ignores this problem, however, when she discovers that Ryoko, her childhood rival, is also there. This starts up a feud between the two, and it results in a space fight between them. Mihoshi tries to stop them, so that she can return to the Galaxy Police, but fails. In the end of the fight, both ships are destroyed. Aeka has no way of returning home, so Tenchi allows her to remain at the Masaki residence, with Ryoko and Mihoshi. Aeka considers this a vacation away from her many duties as the Crown Princess of Jurai. However, this also enables Kagato, who poses as Yosho, to gain control of the throne, and then label her as a traitor to Jurai.
While at the Masaki residence, Aeka fights with Ryoko almost constantly. One of the main topics is their childhood. Each has a different view as to how certain events took place, and more often than not, Aeka's viewpoint is believed over Ryoko's. When not fighting with Ryoko, Aeka does help out around the shrine, in order to pay back the Masaki's for their hospitality. She also provides some information on Jurai when the group set out to clear themselves of any charges brought upon them by the false Yosho, though she and Sasami were the group was charged in the first place. Since she and Sasami were the next in line for the throne, they needed to be gotten rid of so that Kagato could control Jurai and the universe.
Aeka is voiced by Takada Yumi in the Japanese anime.
